When I was in high school my best friend and I both filled job positions at a British pub where my older sister was already an employee. My best friend worked in the gift shop, my sister in the pub as a waitress, and unfortunately for me I became the weekend dish washer. Each weekend would be wild and full of beer, burgers, and angry waitresses all over the place for me to deal with. Although the employees who worked there were overall wonderful, my boss was quite the opposite. Unluckily for myself, my mediocre work situation eventually lead to an extremely awkward situation I never foresaw and will never be able to forget. Looking back my actions were those of a typical teenager, however from this experience I took the wisdom to never talk about people behind their back and keep all comments I wouldn’t say to them personally to myself.
One evening after speaking to my boss and learning that she yet again switched up my hours as well as my friends (thus forcing us rearrange our preexisting plans for the week), I angrily texted my friend to let her know about the information I had just heard. In this particular text message I used a word to describe my boss that was far from appropriate, so we’ll just leave it up to your imagination. I waited for my friend to respond to my message, however that response never came. I assumed she either didn’t care or didn’t receive the text but either way, I didn’t pay further attention to the matter and forgot about it.
Later that night I received a jarring call from my sister, who also worked at the pub. I found out where that text message was sent and why my friend never responded. My friend never got that text. ..My boss did! I was mindless while sending the text, and thinking about my boss I accidentally sent the text to her rather than my friend. Through the employee grapevine she heard a rumor about a bad text that was sent to my boss from me, and it was her impression that I mean to send it to her. Rather than be embarrassed for me she found it hilarious, however at the time I was so embarrassed I could barely form a sentence. What are the chances that the one text I didn’t want my boss to see is accidentally sent to her?! It turns out that what I accidentally said to my boss in that message is what the majority of the employees were thinking, and even though the situation was extremely awkward and my boss-employee relationship was shattered, our work situations improved. Honestly, my boss was probably just as embarrassed as I was about the whole thing. I resolved the situation with flowers, chocolate, and a letter of explanation and it all ended alright but it was definitely one of the most embarrassing situations that I myself into during high school.
