As soon as our plane landed in Virginia, the great tour began. As a student, I was never much for history, but discovering firsthand the humble beginnings of your country will definitely spark an unknown interest. The cities are peppered with landmarks, quotes, remembrances, and timeless art. Even if you don't think you enjoy artifacts and things from the past, you're promised to be in awe in this place.
I heavily remember visiting the Arlington cemetery and witnessing the "changing of the guard" at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Such dedication and strength. Words almost can't describe the site of the white tombstones climbing over each groomed hill of grass. You hear the saying, "Freedom isn't free" but actually seeing the cost up close and personal gives that a completely new meaning.
From that trip on and still into today my appreciation for our soldiers and country leaders has grown exponentially. It really takes true humility and courage to serve your country selflessly and honorably. If ever you have the blessed chance to visit Washington DC, do take the opportunity to experience the US' vast and glorious history as you will never be same after doing so.
