I was in town and homeless, there to see my friend Matt DiGangi. For a few days I had managed to hang out with this gay guy without letting him make any advances. In the end we parted ways, he giving me $60 to help get the rest of the way home.

I went and hung out with the library drifters, young kids who did not go to school or do anything besides play hackey sack and hang out outside of the library.

One of them was living in the attic of the building he'd formerly rented at, and I went with this guy for a few hours while he bought himself a nice leather jacket from the Goodwill, but that's another story.

Anyway, DiGangi finally wrote me back. The library had these internet terminals you could use for fifteen minutes without a library card or an address or anything. In between conversations about giant insurance settlements I was sure would never happen for these folks and what not, I finally got an e-mail back from him. He told me to meet him somewhere, a place called Bukowski Tavern, and I met him there and then he took me for Surf & Turf at this place up town.

He fed me tequila out of a flask. When I got back to the library, the kids had fifths of liquor out. They declared it was Drunk Night at the Library.

It happened to be my 19th birthday. We had a good time.

Then I was on my way home the following day, first a train out of South Station and then a bus out of Portland to Bangor.
