I was 15 and really enjoying life... At age 11 i was admitted to hospital with abdominal pain and no one knew what was wrong and so doctors just assumed i was close to starting my period and that was all. 4 years passed when i fell ill again with the same pain. I went to the doctors and i was referred to a doctor at banrsley general hospital. It was first suggested i had celiac disease which meant o couldnt eat wheat or gluten. I accepted this and was okay with it. The doctor at the hospital knew something serious was wrong so he referred for an MRI scan at Sheffield Childrens Hospital. I had this scan and still nobody knew what was wrong but they had found something in my liver. I had several more scans and still nobody knew. I had a scope (a camera down your throat) which i had a bronchospasm (serious asthma attack) under the anaesthetic. When i woke up my skin went really red and really flushed. This is when all the doctors and nurses got worried and the penny seemed to drop. They knew what it was but had to do more research. I was called back a month later on the20th august 2008 to a paediatric haemotology clinic. This was the day my life drastically changed.
I was told I had carcinoid syndrome. A slow growing extremely rare type of cancer. I had it in most of my bowel and in most of my liver. I had symptoms of flushing of the skin and wheezing (which confirmed i didnt have asthma at all). In October of the same year I had major surgery to remove most of my bowel. I was in hospital for so long. Of course all this happened in my final year at high school which meant i had to drop some of my subjects but somehow i still managed to pass with 8 GCSE's grades A-C, which i am extremely proud of.
My life is so much Different now as simple things as walking upstairs tire me out. I have a injection of lanreotide in to my buttocks every 4 weeks and next year i will be having several more operations to remove the cancer from my liver and hopefully this will offer a cure.
I have just started university and i am trying tp get my life on track even though i know next year i will have to take a year out.
Thanks for reading smile

Dear Paige,
Wow, that’s a very harsh message to get, especially when you’re still that young. At 15 your life should be focused on growing up, learning and making friends, not on surviving cancer. I cannot imagine what you must have been going through on this day.

Really great to read that you’ve still managed to continue school. Respect for that.

Thanks for sharing, hope to read more from you. Maybe you could use this site to keep record of your experiences towards recovery.

Keep strong and I wish you all possible luck in your future.
