My family had planned a vacation, all the way from our home in the Midwest down to Mississippi by the ocean. We had reserved a special beach house to rent, right on the beach, and prepaid one hundred dollars. Our trip took us on a long adventure, as we passed through the countryside on our way, marveling at such things as the Spanish moss and the types of trees that did not grow near where we lived.
Finally we reached Mississippi, and neared our final destination—the town of Gulfport. We were excited, as being from the middle of the country, we rarely saw the beach.
Our excitement was turned to frustration when we arrived at our beach house, and met the owner. “There is no room,” he informed us. How could that be? We had made a reservation. We had left a down payment. How could it just happen that there is now no room? However he was not planning to change his mind. Finally he at least gave us a hundred dollar bill, the amount we had paid to reserve the beach house, and left us to our own devices to figure out what to do from there on out.
The whole situation seemed suspicious. Everything smelled a little fishy. Why had he just come out and told us there was no room? Why had he not wanted to give us the money? What about the bill that he had given us? We looked at it carefully. Was it even genuine or was it counterfeit? It looked amazingly suspicious to us.
Before we could even begin to enjoy our stay in Gulfport, we had to find somewhere else to stay. We finally found a hotel, within close walking distance to the beach, and settled in. We took our inner tubes to the beach, and enjoyed riding the waves and searching for shells on the black sand of the beach.
The next day, we went to visit the aquarium. When we had to pay to get in, my dad handed them the questionable one hundred dollar bill that the beach house owner had given us. Would they take it, or examine it and decide it was counterfeit? As they accepted the money, we felt relief! We were glad to get this possibly counterfeit money off our hands! Seeing the dolphins perform there, as well as the whales and the sea lions was enjoyable to the whole family!
Before our stay was over, we also rode a small boat to an island not far off the coast. On our trip, we saw wild dolphins jumping out of the water around the boat—a special treat.
Despite the odd beginning to our time in this town, we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly!
