We had seen pictures of the Grand Canyon before, but when we actually saw it with our own eyes, we were blown away with its awe and beauty and immenseness. We had never imagined how huge it actually was.
We decided to take a hike down one of the trails towards the bottom of this huge canyon. Although we thought that it would be fun to go all the way down to the bottom, the trail was many miles long, and we did not think we would have the energy to get all the way down, and back up again, especially as my younger siblings were still quite young.
We packed a lot of water and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to give us strength for the way, and set out. We weren't sure how far to go, so as not to tire ourselves out too much. When one climbs a mountain, the uphill part is first, but when one hikes a canyon, the easy part is first, but one still needs to climb back up to ground level to get out of the canyon! As we hiked, we could see gorgeous views of the canyon. A mule train passed us, each mule carrying a rider along these steep paths, as mules are known for being sure of foot.
We stopped along the way for a peanut butter and jelly picnic to replenish our energy, as well as drinking water from our water bottles from time to time. We made it down two and a half miles before deciding that we should turn around in order to have strength to make the climb back up to the top. Some we met had camping gear, and were hiking up after a trip to the bottom. The trip back up was harder than our descent, but we made it fine. One good thing was that our back packs were lighter than they were on our trip down as we had now already eaten the food and drunk much of the water. When we made it back up to the rim, we were a little tired, but had really enjoyed the experience. We decided that if we ever tried it again, we could go down even a little further!
After the Grand Canyon, we continued on to the Painted Desert. The petrified wood was very interesting, but neither this nor the salty water of the Great Salt Lake were able to compare to the Grand Canyon by far!
