My story about September 11th might not ever get published or be made into a documentary, however, it is my story, and just like everyone else, I can tell you almost everything that happened that day.
I was in 8th grade at the time, sitting in science class with some very good company. By good company I mean, some of my closest friends to this day, bridesmaids and groomsman for my future wedding, a future sister in-law, and a future beautiful bride.
I was sitting in the front left of the room. I know this because I was the first one to see the teachers outside talking in the hallway. As Mr. Q wheeled in a TV with a frightened look on his face, someone joked, "Hey look! We get to watch cartoons!" He replied, "No. More like our country is being attacked." No one said anything after that.
When he turned on the TV, we saw the towers smoking. It was the quietest that room had ever gotten. They only left the TV on and in our room for a couple minutes. Then they took it away and went on with class like nothing happened. So until I got home, that was kind of my mentality. I knew something bad happened, but I had no idea how bad.
After I got home from school I started watching TV. The reason I knew that this was as serious as it was, was that there was nothing else on TV. Every channel was a CNN or Fox News type channel, including all of that cartoon channels. I had never seen anything like that before. Then I went up to my room and watched TV for hours trying to figure out what was happening.
I don't remember going to sleep that night, and quite frankly, I don't know if I did. I just laid there watching news broadcasters trying to piece together what they thought had happened. I remember exactly how I felt that night, but I am at a loss trying to describe it. I wasn't sad or scared. I was just empty. I felt like I was in someone else’s body, watching the news in a foreign language
I didn't know anyone personally who died in the attacks that day, but I feel like a part of me died that day. The country that I had taken for granted was now at war. If you were to tell me on September 10th, 2001, "Tomorrow a war is going to start, and you are going to be a part of it," I would have thought you were crazy.
But now I live with my wife (yes the girl from 8th grade) and dog in a town far from my family and friends, training to fight in that same war that was started over ten years ago. Just like everyone else, to me it feels like it was yesterday.
