I am crazy sometimes. I do things without thinking too much. That’s exactly what I did when Jess asked me if I would need some help. I said no. I regretted.
This was my fist day with Jess and her family. They lived in McFarland. I worked in Madison. It is not a big dial if you have a car. But I didn’t. I had a bike. And a night shift.
It was midnight. I was biking on the highway. It was dark but I was not scared. I was only thinking about the way. I didn’t want to make mistakes once I get to McFarland. I felt relief when I turned and left the highway behind me.
McFarland is a lovely place for families. It is safe and quiet. When I moved in the first thing that Jess said was:
“Don’t worry honey when you bike, this is a safe town. Even the policemen are friendly here” – she smiled.
“Ok, not all the policemen are friendly. We have one tall fat guy who is not talkative at all. Stay away from him”- Kevin, her boyfriend, said this with a mystic tone. He looked like a detective from those old film noir movies. He was funny.
“I’ll try to avoid him. But who knows, maybe we’ll fall in love someday.” – I said.
I was thinking about this conversation while I was biking because I saw a police car behind me. Suddenly he turned on the lights and I couldn’t believe that he wanted me to stop. He stopped me while biking? That was horrible.
I stopped and thought that I am so unlucky. I knew that when the door opens this fat and tall guy will come out. And I was right. I couldn’t stop laughing. After so many situations and unlucky moments this was the top, the funniest. America is full with criminals because the world is full with them. But, that night I was stopped by the police. I didn’t have lights.
“Do you have any questions?”- He asked at the end. He had explained everything and I really didn’t have questions.
“Ok, whatever. I’ll repeat anyway.”- He continued.
It was so funny. He asked me about my address and I didn’t know the exact name of the street. I said that it started on ‘B’. He was shocked. Then he asked if I was sure that I knew the way. I wasn’t but I answer ‘yes’. And I started to explain that my next turn is on right and then on left. He was suspicious. The next question was about my mobile phone. He asked if I used a mobile phone. When I answered that I hadn’t bought it because I didn’t need one, he had priceless face.
“You are biking in the middle of the night without lights and mobile phone, with no address and no idea where you live. Do you know how dangerous this country can be?”- He was deadly serious. The problem was that I wasn’t
“I’ll buy lights. And I know where I live. Actually, can I go home?” – I thought that I was rude. But he let me go.
He was driving behind me on my way to the house. I felt strange when I arrived. I spent the night thinking about the law and the duties of the police. The police should be in service to the people in the community, to inform them and protect them. And this policeman, even if he was funny because he looked so strict, was just doing his work properly. In my country a policeman is not a person who would explain you everything you need to be and to feel safe. The low is not strict and the police institution is just a mask for something bigger. That’s why I couldn’t believe that I was stopped while biking. In my country sometimes they won’t stop you even if you are flying beyond the highway.
