The Day We Extended Our Family
It had only been a couple days since we had gotten back from our honeymoon in Hawaii, so to say that we were, “Newlyweds,” was an understatement. We were a living, breathing walking, romantic comedy with a happy ending. And on this day, it was only going to get better.
We had just enjoyed a delicious and healthy meal at an all you can eat pizza buffet. Since my wife and I are such big animal lovers, I suggested we go into the pet store that was next door to the pizza place. We had been in several pet stores before, always leaving empty handed because we had always lived in apartments that didn’t allow animals. As we were about to walk in, I asked, “What would you do if they had a Bernese Mountain Dog in there?” To which she replied, “We would buy it.” We had wanted a Berner for a long time, and planned on buying one someday. Not anytime soon though, because we were moving to Florida in a couple months, and that wouldn’t make sense.
As we walked passed the different cages of dogs we eventually saw the Berner. One giant big ball of fluff. It was a whopping 12 lbs of nothing but black, white and brown cotton. I saw her before my wife did, and I knew that we were going to get her. So I stopped looking at the dog and started watching my wife. I just waited, because I did not want to miss the reaction on her face when she saw this puppy.
When she finally saw her, she started acting like she had never seen a puppy before. And who could blame her. This dog was literally cuter than anything I had ever seen in my life. My wife couldn’t contain her smile and laughter. We asked he workers if we could hold her. Once we held her, it was officially over. She was going to be coming home with us.
2 years, and 70lbs later she is coming up on her second birthday. She has lost a lot of her puppyness, but is still the best dog ever. She has swam in the Gulf of Mexico, and the Atlantic Ocean. She has traversed dog parks in Ohio and peach orchards in Georgia. She is a part of our family.
